Like it was yesterday, I can remember being five years old and eagerly awaiting the next episode of Wonder Woman. As soon as that undeniably catchy theme song came on I was spinning, crossing my wrists, and planting my fists at my waist in the power stance. I had a ritual of dressing up for the occasion in the appropriate Underoos, donning a yellow hair band fashioned like a crown, with a rope looped at my hip as my Lasso of Truth.
Even at that tender age I recognized Wonder Woman’s unique strength and felt inspired to mimic her super hero qualities. It was rare for girls to have a strong heroine that embodied Amazon strength and who fought for love.
Thirty-five years later I found myself eagerly awaiting the release of the movie. It was worth the wait, as it was everything I had hoped for. She is as independent as she is emotionally and physically strong. She is willing to do whatever it takes, including sacrificing her comforts of home and even her own well-being, to fight for her beliefs, which are rooted in love and restoring peace for mankind.
Thank you, Wonder Woman, for being my super hero and for showing me how beautiful strength can be.
